CID's mission is to teach children who are deaf and hard of hearing to listen, talk, read and succeed. We partner with families and collaborate with professionals worldwide. Our goal is to help children communicate to achieve their fullest potential.

The CID Joanne Parrish Knight Family Center serves babies from birth to 3. Our preschool kindergarten program serves children ages 3 to 5. Our primary department serves children up to age 12.

Dr. Max Goldstein founded CID in 1914. CID is a school where children who are hearing-impaired learn to listen, talk and read without using sign language. We prepare children to participate and succeed in their neighborhood schools. Generous private support makes us easy to afford. We serve children from birth to age 12.

CID has a full-time staff of cochlear implant and hearing aid specialists. We also have speech-language pathologists and an occupational therapist, school counselor and school nurse. Our experienced teachers have master's degrees in deaf education. Some also specialize in early childhood and related fields. They are fully certified and benefit from an ongoing commitment to professional development in the CID school.

Some Central Institute for the Deaf school teachers and audiologists serve on the faculty of the Washington University School of Medicine Program in Audiology and Communication Sciences (PACS). This program also offers graduate degrees in education of the hearing impaired. Professionals from around the world attend CID continuing education workshops.

The CID school enjoys a long affiliation with Washington University. In 1931, our teacher training program became the first of its kind to offer a university degree. CID has a rich history of research in the fields of hearing and deafness.

Visit the Central Institute for the Deaf school.   Join us for a Third Wednesday CID OPEN HOUSE!
