Welcome

CID is a school where children who are deaf and hard of hearing learn to listen, talk and read without using sign language. We prepare children to participate and succeed in their neighborhood schools. Generous private support makes us affordable for all. We serve children from birth to age 12.

You have come to an excellent place to explore your child’s potential to listen, talk, grow and succeed. CID has 98 years experience helping deaf children learn to listen and talk and putting them on the path toward happy and productive lives.

If you are a parent of a recently diagnosed baby, the Joanne Parrish Knight Family Center is the place for you and your family. Our teachers and counselors will help you begin to help your child develop listening, understanding, vocalizing and communication skills.

CID also offers a nursery class for 2-year-olds, a language-rich pre-k emphasizing emerging literacy and social skills and a primary department for the auditory-oral education of children through the 6th grade. All CID programs are designed to prepare children for mainstream educational settings. In a highly individualized, assessment-based program with a 5-1 or better student-teacher ratio, we weave speech, language and auditory instruction throughout the academics and offer music, art, physical education and computer instruction.

Our teachers, speech therapists and pediatric audiologists are dedicated, caring individuals with advanced degrees in deaf education and faculty appointments at Washington University School of Medicine. Their successes speak in the voices and everyday lives of our alumni, many of whom pursue higher education and professional careers.

Did you know:

Serving students and families directly is the first part of CID's mission. The second part is providing continuing education, graduate practicum experience, guided observations, educational and listening support tools and other resources for professionals in deaf education and related fields around the world. Our goal is to provide support and expertise so they can more effectively help children who are deaf and hard of hearing learn to listen, talk, read and succeed.

To fulfill both parts of CID's mission, we often work in collaboration with educators, audiologists and other specialists, and with hospitals, universities and other schools. The Washington University School of Medicine Program in Audiology and Communication Sciences (PACS) shares CID's history and campus in St. Louis. CID teachers and audiologists are faculty members.
