JoEllen B. Epstein, MAEd, CED was associate principal of the Central Institute for the Deaf Oral School before becoming principal in August 2002. In the past 25 years, she has held various other positions at CID, including administrative coordinator, educational consultant, literacy project coordinator, summer school coordinator and classroom teacher of the deaf.
As an educator, Ms. Epstein is certified by the State of Missouri and the Council on Education of the Deaf. As an administrator, she holds Missouri State Principal Certification. In 2001, she participated in Leader Track Class One, a leadership training academy funded by the Oberkotter Foundation and designed for managers of schools that help deaf children learn to listen and talk.
Ms. Epstein has made presentations at the Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing’s annual convention, at the annual convention of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) and for the Missouri Cooperating School Districts (CSD). She is a member of the Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, the International Reading Association, the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development and the National Staff Development Council. She holds a master’s degree in education with an emphasis in leadership and administration from Maryville University and a bachelor’s degree in speech and hearing majoring in deaf education from Washington University/CID. She is an instructor in the Washington University School of Medicine Program in Audiology and Communication Sciences, a CID at Washington University School of Medicine program.
Ms. Epstein has a long association with Central Institute for the Deaf. Her sister Vicki attended the CID school from 1949 to 1959 after her parents moved from Virginia to St. Louis so Vicki could attend. |
