Parent Support and Education

All CID parents are invited to educational group meetings held once or twice monthly. Topics include child development, behavior management, dealing with feelings, using books to stimulate language development, toileting issues, devices for deaf and hearing-impaired children, and causes of childhood deafness. Staff and guest speakers present the meetings. Panels of other parents of older children as well as panels of older hearing-impaired students may answer questions for the parent group.

Parents of children from birth to 3 have the opportunity for weekly individual education sessions with a teacher-counselor in the CID Joanne Parrish Knight Family Center. Parents of children of all ages are encouraged to observe their child's program, talk with the teacher, and meet with the department coordinator and principal. Parents may invite other family members or care providers to tour the CID school.

Parents of children ages 3 through 12 are welcome to meet with the department coordinator and with CID's counselor, who is profoundly deaf, to discuss special family situations or problems with which they may need help.

The CID Parent Organization provides opportunities for all parents of CID school children ranging in age from birth to 12 years. Events are held at least monthly and are broad in nature. Included are holiday and family events and fundraising activities to support CID.
